Guidelines for Using Essential Oils
Essential oils are concentrated aromatic liquids extracted from plants using various methods such as steam distillation, cold pressing, or solvent extraction. They are composed of volatile compounds, giving them their characteristic fragrance and therapeutic qualities.
The following guidelines apply to essential oils used for personal use, resale, or the formulation of other products.
Prevention
Obtain, read, and follow all safety instructions before use. Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames, and other ignition sources. Keep the container tightly closed when in storage and not in use. Take precautionary measures against static discharge. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing, eye protection, and face protection. Always use in a well-ventilated area.
Wash your hands thoroughly after handling (even if you wore gloves). Do not eat, drink, or smoke (vape) when actively using this product. Do not touch your face, eyes, or get into eyes.
Health Hazards
Essential oils can be harmful if swallowed and may cause an allergic skin reaction, or become harmful if inhaled, cause respiratory irritation, or cause drowsiness or dizziness.
IF SWALLOWED: Get medical help. Do not induce vomiting. IF ON THE SKIN: Wash with plenty of water. If skin irritation or rash occurs, get medical help. IF IN THE EYES: Immediately rinse with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. IF INHALED: Remove the person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing. Get medical help.
Dilution
Diluting essential oils does not take away an oil’s benefits, but makes way for better absorption into the skin and (in a diffuser) easier dispersal into the air, thus extending the benefits for longer. Evaporation is slowed, and sensitive skin isn’t overpowered. It’s generally recommended to start with a ratio of one drop of essential oil to five drops of carrier oil.
Patch Test
For allergen or reactive testing, initiate a topical dose of a diluted essential oil onto the skin of the inner elbow. Cover with a bandage or gauze and wait 12-24 hours to observe any reaction. If a response occurs, discontinue use. If you experience immediate discomfort or before 12 hours have passed, immediately wash the area with soap and warm water. For essential oils or blends new to your skin, instead of the 1:5 ratio, opt for 1:10 (one drop of essential oil to ten drops of carrier oil).
Internal Use
Our suppliers provide us with essential oils that can be used internally, but we do not recommend it. Our business is aligned for product development and additional tests for internal use (and cooking) have not been conducted. You shouldn’t use essential oils internally unless you’ve undergone advanced training and certification or are acting under the guidance of a trained professional.
Aromatherapy
Through inhalation or diffusion, you can experience aromatherapy benefits like easing stress and anxiety or improving your quality of sleep. It’s important to follow proper dilution guidelines. If diffusing, diffuse intermittently, typically thirty to sixty minutes on, with the same length off after.
Not for Children, Infants, or Pets
Children, infants, and pets are smaller and more sensitive compared to adult humans, so the use of essential oils is different. While they can be applied in certain uses: do not use on children, infants, or pets. Consult with your healthcare provider on whether use is appropriate.
Pregnancy
Do not use essential oils if pregnant. Consult with your healthcare provider on whether use is appropriate.
Phototoxicity
Some essential oils (like citrus) increase photosensitivity, where light and ultraviolet rays can cause skin burns if exposed after application. Avoid direct sunlight or UV rays for at least twelve hours after skin application.
